How to Select Battery Test Lab Equipment

Five key considerations when selecting battery test lab equipment

There is a lot to consider when investing in new battery test lab equipment.

Battery testing is complex and time consuming and applications vary significantly. Choosing quality equipment that meets your specialized needs with as much built-in flexibility as possible is an important part of a successful long-term operation.

Here are five questions to get you started.

1. Is the equipment capable of controlling and measuring key testing characteristics (e.g. voltage, current) with the required test fidelity?

The equipment you choose must be able to perform transients with the appropriate shifts to satisfy the drive cycles and requirements for response time. Testing effectiveness can be enhanced by targeted use of advanced measurement techniques. This can allow for higher levels of information relevant to the application, shortening test time requirements.

2. Do you have the right data management strategy?

Data needs to be accessible in the right location at the right time. A facility must have quick testing evaluation and response to continually improve testing. The implementation is influenced by the quantity of data produced, and the complexity of interactions between multiple test stands.

3. What are the right test scheduling and automated test running considerations to minimize equipment downtime?

Running test schedules across multiple DUT’s can help achieve deadlines faster but requires coordination both from testing and data management/combination.

4. Which modeling and analysis techniques apply?

The right modeling and analysis techniques developed in conjunction with testing approaches allow for an overall holistic approach to maximize the output of the testing data.

5. Does your equipment supplier have the expertise to help you determine the best approach for your intended application?
