The praseodymium powder supplied to the applications lab was a dark brown powder. Praseodymium is a soft, silvery, malleable and ductile metal in the lanthanide group. The apparent density is 6.8 kg/m3 and is paramagnetic at any temperature above 1 K. This material is insoluble in water, but soluble in strong acid.

Zeta potential is a measure of the charge on suspended particles. This property is typically more important for suspensions of small particles where there is high surface area and significant particle – particle interactions. While there is no theoretical upper particle size limit for zeta potential measurements, there are physical constraints in making useful measurements, which are addressed in this note.

Dynamic light scattering (DLS) results are often expressed in terms of the Z-average. The Z-average arises when DLS data is analyzed by the use of the technique of cumulants. Since the calculation of the Z-average is mathematically stable, the Z-average result is insensitive to noise. And that makes it a preferred DLS size parameter. An instrument-to-instrument variation study was performed with 2 standards on 30 randomly selected units of the HORIBA LA-350 laser diffraction particle size analyzer. One standard was a monodisperse polystyrene latex and the other was a polydisperse particle standard.
